Craig lives in central Lonsdale with his wife Joanne and their two children Maddy and Louis. Craig has taught at Langara College since 1992 where he has developed popular courses in the history of the Middle East and environmental history. In November 2013 Craig was elected President of the BCNDP. Joanne is a family physician who works in Vancouver’s Downtown East Side.
Craig has served four terms on City Council. He has been a City representative on the Museum and Archives Commission, the North Vancouver Recreation Commission, the Arts Commission, the Chamber of Commerce, the Parks and Environment Committee and the Social Planning Committee. He has also served the City on the Metro Vancouver, Finance, Waste Management and Water Committees as well as the Translink Mayor’s Council.
Today’s challenge is to ensure that North Vancouver remains a community that includes everybody. That means continuing to maintain a variety of housing options for everybody from young families to people with disabilities as well as maintaining a vital local economy and the jobs that come with it.
It also means maintaining and strengthening core City services as well as those for youth, seniors, families, and those in need. I know that we can continue to do all this – and keep our record of strong fiscal management and low taxes.
Leadership & Experience
The challenges we face often mean that Council has to make difficult decisions. But for me the key is to listen to what the whole community has to say and to find positive solutions that work for everybody.
It’s about being clear about your values and creating consensus.
It’s about facing up to the issues and tackling them head on.
I’ve worked hard to bring Council together so that we can deal with the issues that matter most to our citizens. It’s what I’ve always done - and it’s what I always will do.
I believe that the best government is the one that keeps its eyes clearly focused on the challenges of the future. It’s by doing this that the City of North Vancouver has been recognized both at home and abroad as one of the most sustainable and livable cities in North America.
But many challenges remain – providing affordable housing for seniors and youth; reducing waste and increasing energy efficiency for a more sustainable future; ensuring that families have key supports like childcare and housing that meet their needs.
I’ve worked hard to ensure that we can become a diverse, accessible, and livable community. And I know that together we can do more.
